Despite Vietnam’s tropical monsoon climate, snowfall is a rare but mesmerizing phenomenon in some northern highland regions. Here are four must-visit destinations in Vietnam where visitors can witness snow and frost.
Mau Son Peak, Lang Son

Mau Son Peak in Lang Son Province is one of Vietnam’s most famous snow-watching locations. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, this region is renowned for its breathtaking natural scenery. During the coldest winter days, Mau Son transforms into a fairytale-like landscape as thick snow blankets the mountains. The ancient houses of the Dao and Tay ethnic groups emerge amidst the mist and frost, creating a surreal ambiance.
Visitors to Mau Son in winter can not only enjoy the spectacular snowfall but also indulge in local specialties like six-spur chicken, roasted pork, and Mau Son wine, which help keep the body warm in the chilly weather.
Ta Xua, Son La

Ta Xua, located in Bac Yen District, Son La Province, is widely known as a paradise for cloud-hunting. However, in winter, it takes on an entirely different charm when cold air combines with rolling clouds and occasional frost. Towering mountain peaks are hidden in the mist, making the scenery even more magical.
From December to February, Ta Xua may experience frost or even light snowfall. However, snow does not appear here every year, so visitors should check weather forecasts in advance to increase their chances of witnessing this natural wonder.
Sapa, Lao Cai

Sapa is undoubtedly Vietnam’s most popular destination for experiencing snowfall. When winter arrives, this town becomes even more enchanting, offering travelers the rare opportunity to see snow-covered terraced fields and wooden houses.
One of the best places to enjoy snow in Sapa is Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, often referred to as “the Roof of Indochina.” When temperatures drop below 0°C, Fansipan is blanketed with ice and snow, making it an unmissable sight for adventure lovers.
Beyond its snowy landscapes, Sapa is also known for its warm and flavorful cuisine, including hotpot with salmon, grilled meat, and Thang Co (a traditional horse meat stew), which provide comfort against the cold.
Phia Oac Mountain, Cao Bang

Phia Oac Mountain in Nguyen Binh District, Cao Bang Province, stands at over 1,900 meters and is one of the highest peaks in northern Vietnam. When winter arrives, the entire mountain is draped in frost and snow, creating a breathtaking frozen landscape.
The usually green forests of Phia Oac turn into a glistening winter wonderland, covered in layers of frost. The peaceful atmosphere and untouched beauty make this location perfect for those seeking a unique winter experience. The best time to visit Phia Oac for snow is between late December and January.
