Tra Su Bird Sanctuary, also known as Tra Su Cajuput Forest or Tra Su Melaleuca Forest, is a paradise for nature enthusiasts, especially those passionate about birdwatching and wildlife photography. Located in Van Giao Commune, Tinh Bien District, An Giang Province, the sanctuary lies approximately 30 kilometers west of Chau Doc and just 10 kilometers from the Cambodian border.
When people think of An Giang tourism, iconic destinations like Ba Chua Xu Temple, Cam Mountain, Sam Mountain, and the picturesque palm fields at sunset often come to mind. Many also recall the bustling Chau Doc Market, famously known as the “Kingdom of Fish”. However, the breathtaking Tra Su Melaleuca Forest, which is gaining international recognition on world-famous travel sites, is sometimes overlooked.
A Forest Reborn from the Ashes of War
During the Vietnam War, Tra Su Forest suffered significant destruction due to bombings by the U.S. military. After the war, the An Giang provincial government initiated a reforestation project, leading to the sanctuary’s transformation into a flourishing eco-tourism site and a thriving habitat for diverse flora and fauna.

Today, the sanctuary spans approximately 845 hectares, serving as a vital natural habitat for numerous species of colorful birds and rare wildlife. The reserve boasts over 140 different plant species, with Cajuput trees (Melaleuca) being particularly dominant in this wetland ecosystem.
Exploring Tra Su – A Unique Experience
To promote eco-tourism, the An Giang government has heavily invested in the development of Tra Su Bird Sanctuary. One of its most remarkable features is the Tra Su Bamboo Bridge, recognized as the longest bamboo bridge in the world.

Visitors can explore the floating forest in three unique ways:
- By motorboat – for a faster, scenic ride through the waterways.
- By rowing boat – offering a peaceful, immersive experience surrounded by nature.
- On foot – for those who want to walk along the bamboo bridge and take in the breathtaking views.
Since Tra Su Bird Sanctuary is just a short 30 km drive from Chau Doc, it can easily be combined with a Mekong Delta tour, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Southern Vietnam.
