Ponagar Tower Recognized as a Special National Monument

On January 17, 2025, the Department of Culture and Sports of Khanh Hoa Province officially announced that Ponagar Tower has been recognized as a Special National Monument.

A Significant Recognition for Ponagar Tower

According to Decision No. 152 (January 17, 2025) issued by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, Ponagar Tower has been officially designated as a Special National Monument. This recognition holds great significance for this Cham cultural heritage site.

Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Khanh Hoa Department of Culture and Sports, stated that this designation enhances the site’s status within Vietnam’s cultural heritage system. The recognition is expected to attract more domestic and international tourists, providing them with opportunities to explore Cham culture. Additionally, it will facilitate the preservation and promotion of the site’s historical and cultural value.

Ponagar Tower – A Cultural Icon of Khanh Hoa Province

Besides Ponagar Tower, four other sites have also been recognized as Special National Monuments in this classification, including:

  • Den Xam (Nam Dinh Province)
  • Boi Khe Pagoda (Hanoi)
  • Tu Luong Xam Relic Complex – The Military Base of Ngo Quyen in 938 (Hai Phong)
  • Mac Dynasty Relic Complex in Duong Kinh (Hai Phong)

Ponagar Tower – A Symbol of Cham Culture in Nha Trang

Ponagar Tower is one of the most significant historical and cultural relics of the ancient Cham Kingdom. Located 2 km north of Nha Trang city center, this complex is dedicated to Goddess Ponagar, the revered Mother Goddess of the Cham people’s belief system.

The architectural ensemble consists of four towers and two stele houses, built from reddish bricks using the unique construction techniques of the Cham people. The towers are adorned with intricate carvings and bas-reliefs, depicting scenes from Cham mythology and daily life.

Ponagar Tower stands as a remarkable architectural and spiritual landmark in Khanh Hoa Province. It is also the venue for significant cultural festivals that attract large numbers of visitors each year. The recognition as a Special National Monument further underscores its cultural and historical importance, ensuring its continued preservation for future generations.
